As much of a Batman fan that I am (I’ve been pretty good pumping out the love), I’m a much bigger fan of The Joker. When I was a kid if you were to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, “The Joker” would have been an answer you would have gotten. As a kid, there’s not a lot of thought behind an answer like that. “He does whatever he wants, has a great time doing it and when Batman catches him, he just escapes”
But there is a lot of thought that goes on behind the character himself. A German documentary ‘Too Young To Die’ has released footage of how Heath Ledger got himself prepared for the Role in The Dark Knight! He locked himself in an apartment in London and kept a diary of all things that he wanted to do. It’s really quite an amazing look into what were his inspirations and even how the make up came about.
It’s in German so here is a translation of what’s being said.
“This is the Joker’s diary.
In order to inhabit his character, he (Heath) locked himself up in a hotel room for weeks.
He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch.”
“The hospital scene is interesting because when he was a kid, his sister Kate liked to dress him up as a nurse. He was really funny like that. He also was in the movie.
This is a make-up test which was done eight months before. Before the end of the shooting he wrote “bye bye” on the back of the page. It was hard to see this.’
